Subject: We need real energy policy

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

America's energy future is too important be sidetracked by bogus and simplistic "drill everywhere" proposals that only serve to fatten oil company profits.

I'm depending on you to pass a comprehensive energy policy that does not sacrifice special places but does position our country for a successful economic future. Such a policy would include new standards for clean energy technology and clean efficient cars.

Please reject cynical calls to "drill here, drill now." More drilling will not lower energy prices but will deepen our dangerous oil addiction for another decade or more.

Sincerely,

Background Information

It's time to let Congress know that we want forward-looking energy solutions, not empty drilling promises that will only dig this country into a deeper energy hole. Today, conservation groups and others across the country who want to move America's energy policy forward are participating in a "National Call-In Day for Energy Solutions."

As the Bush Administration's own Energy Department has noted, offshore drilling in protected areas won't help lower prices at the pump.  In fact, we're already drilling like crazy in the United States -- under the Bush administration, drilling permits on federal lands increased by more than 350% -- but that hasn't lowered our fuel prices or gotten us any closer to energy independence.
