Drilling Gone Wrong: Tell Congress to Get Energy Priorities Right

Rather than passing legislation that deepens our reliance on fossil fuels, Congress must begin supporting real energy solutions that boost the health of all American pocketbooks.

Tell your Members of Congress that you want them to fight for a strong economy based on clean energy, not more drilling to pad the pockets of the oil and gas industry.

The letter below lists specific ways Congress can help
provide immediate relief to Americans and build a clean energy economy through renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.

Have your say! Add your concerns below and send the letter to you members of Congress:

Subject: Support real energy solutions that help Americans

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

The high energy prices and impacts to our economy and environment from our backwards energy policy are hurting all Americans. Please take a stand for your constituents: Please resist temptations to deepen our reliance on fossil fuels by supporting legislation that will give Americans relief at the pump, while kick starting the new clean energy economy. Please protect our economy, environment and security by working to create a new energy economy through renewable energy and energy efficiency. Specifically, as my elected official, I urge you to work to:

Repeal oil and gas industry tax breaks and use the money to fund one or more of the following:

- Vouchers for fuel saving vehicle tune ups and purchase of fuel efficient tires. - Vouchers for weatherization and efficiency retrofits of homes. - A straight rebate similar to this year's stimulus checks combined with a public education campaign to teach Americans how to save energy.

Extend federal tax incentives for renewable energy and energy efficient buildings, equipment and appliances. Some of these incentives have already expired while others are scheduled to expire at the end of 2008.

Require all electricity providers to produce at least 25 percent of their energy from renewable energy resources by 2025.

Increase energy efficiency standards for homes and commercial buildings by 30 percent by 2010 and 50 percent by 2020.

Thank you for supporting these critical efforts to create the clean energy economy we need. Our economy, our environment and the secure future of our children and grandchildren depend on it.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The call to "drill at all costs" places America on a backwards path to last century's energy solutions.  Experts agree that drilling these sensitive areas would not lower gas prices by more than a few pennies per gallon - decades from now. So while more drilling may sound like a reasonable answer to our energy woes, it's actually an empty promise that diverts attention from developing better, more-modern solutions that are finally within reach.

If allowed, the dinosaurs of Congress will no doubt continue to dice up more lands to be thrown to oil companies. That's why our true leaders in Congress need to hear from you.

What our nation needs now is 21st Century solutions that create a new clean energy economy while protecting our wildlands.  A clean energy economy would lower energy costs, create jobs, strengthen national security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and protect the environment, especially with respect to global warming.

Click the back button to tell your members of Congress to kick start a new, clean energy economy this year.
