Fire-Safe Communities Act

More than ever, we need to come together and tell our elected officials to move towards better solutions to our fire challenges.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein's Fire-Safe Communities Act is a much needed start. It would provide incentives and a national model ordinance for communities so that they are less vulnerable to fire.

Edit and send the letter below to tell your senators to support co-sponsors of this important legislation.

Subject: Fire-Safe Communities Act

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am writing to urge you to give your needed support to legislation that encourages smarter and less costly wildfire management. Specifically, I would like to ask you to please co-sponsor Sen. Diane Feinstein's Fire-Safe Communities Act, S. 2390.

This important legislation is desperately needed as taxpayers are increasingly leaned on to fund massive firefighting efforts. As fires sweep through the West this summer, it is clear that responsible community development and fire risk mitigation near fire-prone areas could help greatly.

Specifically, the act would establish a national model ordinance that communities can follow to protect themselves. Using best practices of fire mitigation, the ordinance would make recommendations about: safest construction materials for homes and buildings; defensible space guidelines; vegetation management and infrastructure standards.

The legislation would incentivize safety. It would set up grants that allow communities to be reimbursed for up to 90 percent of firefighting costs by the federal government (up from 75 percent).

By encouraging best practices in fire risk mitigation, the bill would set an example for the nation to follow.

Fire safe communities and healthy forests go hand in hand.

I thank you for the opportunity to have my voice heard on this important issue, and I hope you will support this intelligent piece of legislation.

Sincerely,

Background Information

If enacted, the Fire Safe Communities Act, S. 2390, would provide incentives to communities to protect themselves and become less vulnerable to wildfire.

Specifically, the act would establish a national model ordinance that communities can follow to protect themselves. Using best practices of fire mitigation, the ordinance would make recommendations about: safest construction materials for homes and buildings; defensible space guidelines; vegetation management and infrastructure standards.

The legislation would create incentives that promote fire safety. It would set up grants that allow communities to be reimbursed for up to 90 percent of firefighting costs by the federal government (up from 75 percent).

The legislation would do much to make communities in the Wildland Urban Interface more tolerant of controlled burns, in turn helping restore forest health in the long run.

Getting co-sponsors in the Senate and encouraging Sen. Feinstein to push forward on this newly introduced legislation is critically important to move the bill towards enactment.
