America's Serengeti

The Senate is expected to vote as early as May 13 on an energy package full of outdated ideas--especially targeting the Arctic Refuge for drilling--that would move America away from, not toward, a secure energy future.

Please use our letter below to remind your Senators that we can't drill our way out of high energy prices--tell them to oppose any attempt to pass the "American Energy Production Act" (S. 2958) and vote no on the McConnell/Domenici energy amendment to the Flood Insurance bill.

Subject: Say no to drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As gas prices continue to rise, the volume is being turned up on demands to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, expand offshore oil and gas activity, and pursue unproven, environmentally destructive, and economically dubious oil shale development.

I am writing as your constituent to let you know that, while I am concerned about gas prices and their effect on America's economy, I am absolutely opposed to an energy policy that includes drilling in the Arctic Refuge or sensitive offshore areas. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge will do nothing to solve America's energy problems, and could do incredible, permanent harm to this place.

Please oppose any attempt to pass the "American Energy Production Act" (S. 2958) and vote no on the McConnell amendment (S. Amt. 4720) to the Flood Insurance Bill, scheduled for a vote next week.

I am counting on you to vote against any measure that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to development, and move America in the wrong direction in solving our energy challenges.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:

Background Information

Arctic Refuge Must Not be Sacrificed for Oil

Home to more than 250 animal species including wolves, grizzlies, caribou and millions of migrating birds, the Refuge is also the subject of an intense lobbying campaign by the oil industry. Unless we stop them, this world-class wilderness will become a vast oil development field.

As gas prices continue to rise, the volume is being turned up on demands to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, expand offshore oil and gas activity, and pursue environmentally hazardous oil shale and tar sands technologies.  Please help us send a resounding message to the Senate that this place should not be sacrificed to the oil industry.
