Help protect amazing landscapes throughout Colorado

Irreplaceable landscapes within Colorado's White River National Forest region, Colorado's Canyon Country, and the San Juan Mountains are at risk from inappropriate energy development, mining, logging and other commercial interests. Currently, these lands are without the wilderness protections they deserve. If we allow this development to further degrade these landscapes, they will no longer be eligible for wilderness designation.

The time is now for protecting more Colorado wilderness! The recent designation of wilderness in Rocky Mountain National Park and Dominguez Canyon heralds a new era in managing our public lands for the appreciation and enjoyment of future generations. As we celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, we ask that you build on this recent accomplishment by making the protection of more additional wilderness one of your legislative priorities.

As you know, our untrammeled public lands clean our air, provide our water, and house a wide diversity of plant and animal life.  Not only that, these lands are also one of the pillars of our state economy, with outdoor recreation alone bringing in  approximately $10 billion a year to the state economy and supporting 107,000 jobs across Colorado.*

Unfortunately, the continued vitality of Colorado's natural heritage is not ensured. The vast majority of our public lands are open to oil and gas drilling, mining, commercial logging, and the roar and destruction of off-road vehicles -- yet they are essential for wildlife, watersheds and buffering the impacts of climate change.

As recent history has shown, Coloradans overwhelmingly support adding more wilderness because we understand that wilderness benefits us all.  As one of the many citizens who enjoy the direct and indirect benefits of preserving wilderness here in Colorado, I ask you to please work with other members of Colorado's congressional delegation to promptly craft and pass additional wilderness legislation protecting Colorado's wild forests and canyon country.
