We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.

The short explanation of this alert was:

New Mexico’s Otero Mesa is America’s largest and wildest Chihuahuan Desert grassland. It is home to pronghorn, mule deer, mountain lions, over 250 species of migratory songbirds, and many other rare native species. It lies above the largest remaining source of fresh water in New Mexico, with enough fresh water to serve 500,000 people for generations to come.

For years, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance has prevented full-scale oil and gas development from ravaging this fragile desert grassland. New Mexico’s Governor Bill Richardson has taken a strong stance, pledging to protect this natural treasure from development. Most importantly, a majority of New Mexicans have spoken out in support of saving this wild grassland.

Opening Otero Mesa to full-scale oil and gas development is not a question of economics, but rather one of morality. If we allow the destruction of such a wild and beautiful landscape, what as a society have we become? When we ignore our connection to the land, to wildlife and wilderness, we begin to lose the moral compass that guides us through our day-to-day existence. We lose touch with life’s most important gifts.

New Mexicans have made clear their desire to see this grassland protected as a National Conservation Area. Help us in our efforts to convince President Bush that when it comes to the environment he has only one mandate - a mandate to protect it!
