President Obama just signed a Department of Interior and Forest Service funding bill that will help federal conservation programs rebound after years of neglect from the Bush administration.

Programs like wildfire suppression, global warming research and National Wildlife Refuges will benefit, and we'll also see more money going toward protecting parks and open spaces.

Thank you for signing the Department of Interior and Forest Service funding bill last Saturday. The funding you approved will change the course for what the federal government can accomplish. Thanks to the hard work that you and Congress put in, we're finally going to see an end to the starvation diets so many of our most loved programs and services have faced.

We're going to have more money to buy land that will be protected as parks and open space. We will be able to fill our lungs with fresh air and drink clean water. We'll also have more opportunities to go for walks in the woods, fish and camp. The newly protected land will also provide safe harbor for wildlife whose habitat otherwise would have been destroyed.

The legislation gives a boost to research on the perils of global warming so that we can develop new solutions to cope with them.

It also makes a huge impact on the way the U.S. funds wildfire suppression. At long last, the federal agencies charged with this task will have more money available to suppress fires that threaten people or property. The bill also reduces the need for the agencies to transfer funds from vital programs and services to pay for wildfire suppression.

I hope that you and Congress continue to support this kind of forward-looking legislation in the years ahead. Providing more resources to make us and our planet healthier is the kind of change we want to see.
